Ivan Brod

Ivan Brod has had 40 years' experience working with Du Pont, General Electric, and Shell Oil Company in the United States, Germany, and Switzerland. A native of the Czech Republic, he joined UMUC-Europe in 1992 and lives in Heidelberg.

John M. Brudowsky

AB in Mathematics, University of California, Berkeley
Diplom, University of Kaiserslautern

John Brudowsky has extensive experience in the field of mathematics. His Diplom thesis is titled "Über die elementaren Darstellungen von Cauchy-Navierschen Splines." Brudowsky studied mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned an A.B. He has conducted research on earthquakes and has recently published an article titled "Deformation Analysis of the Earth by a Constructive Interpolation Model." Brudowsky joined UMUC-Europe in 1994. His field of research is spherical splines, whose applications are found in many areas of geomathematics, such as earthquake prediction or satellite positioning techniques. Brudowsky also enjoys cycling, hiking, the theater, and cooking; he teaches in the Ramstein/Kaiserslautern area.

DeForest W. Colegrove

BS in Mathematics/Computer Science, Roger Williams University
MBA in International Trade and Finance, Salve Regina University
PhD in Humanities, Salve Regina University

DeForest Colegrove earned a BS in mathematics and computer science from the Roger Williams University, and an MBA with emphasis on international trade and finance, and the PhD in Humanities, both from Salve Regina University. His doctoral dissertation is titled, The Level of Economic Literacy in Russian High School Students. Colegrove has also published a book, Market Economics: A Practical Primer, which has been translated into Russian and is currently being used in the Kazan School System in Russia. He retired from the U.S. Navy, and has taught at Rhode Island College, Kazan State University, and Johnson and Wales University. He joined UMUC-Europe in 1996 and lives in the Hanau area.

Alan W. Ertl

Alan Ertl joined UMUC-Europe after working as an international analyst with American multinationals in Switzerland. His interests range from social-cultural relations in the national and international realm to the problems of democracy, capitalism, and holistic humanism. He lives and teaches in the Ramstein/Kaiserslautern area.

Mark R. Hatlie

Mark R. Hatlie grew up in California, but has now lived in Germany for over 19 years. Currently he is writing his PhD in history at the Karl-Eberhard-Universitaet in Tuebingen, Germany, on the history of Riga, Latvia, during the First World War. William C. Henderson II

BS in Business Administration, Babson College

LLM in Law, George Washington University

William Henderson has extensive experience in civil and criminal law. He was presiding judge for all Navy and Marine Corps cases throughout Europe and the Middle East. As a civilian, Henderson worked on many international civil cases, including the Piper Alfa North Sea oil-platform disaster. In addition to teaching, he consults on international law matters. Bill lives and teaches in southern Italy and is also a jazz singer and guitarist.

Helga Hoepffner

Diploma rer. Pol. (Diplom-Kaufman), University of Würzburg

Helga Hoepffner has been a faculty member with UMUC-Europe since 1968. She is a member of Würzburg City Council. She completed her abitur at the Gymnasium, Kulmbach. Before joining UMUC-Europe as a German language faculty member, Hoepffner taught for U.S. Army Education Centers. She is a recipient of the U.S. Army's second highest award for non-U.S. civilians, the Outstanding Service Medal. She lives in the Würzburg area.

Klaus J. Hoepffner

Masters in Economics, Würzburg University
1st and 2nd Bar Examination, Würzburg University/State of Bavaria
PhD in Law, Würzburg University

Born in Poland, Dr. Hoepffner first went to the United States in 1949 as one of the first U.S. exchange students from that country. He joined UMUC-Europe in 1960 as a part-time faculty lecturer. In 1972, he joined the Ministry of Transportation in Bonn. In addition, he served as a German attaché in Brussels and as a senior civil servant in Bavaria. He was full-time lecturer for the Bavarian Civil Service Academy, teaching constitutional law among other subjects. Dr. Hoepffner is a freelance conference speaker for the European Commission and lives in the Würzburg area.

Dean F. Johnson

PhD in Sociology, Louisiana State University

Dean Johnson is a member of the American Sociological Association, the Southern Sociological Association, and Sociologists for Women in Society. She has contributed papers and articles to the Louisiana Academy of Sciences, the Sociological Quarterly and Sociology in Action. Dr. Johnson served as a naval officer in World War II and was employed as a daily broadcaster for the Ohio Broadcasting Company in the 1950's and 1960's. Her experience includes positions as president of the Northeast Research Institute and as both assistant and associate professor of sociology with the department of sociology and social work at Northwestern State University. She teaches in the Spangdahlem area.

Diane H. Jones-Palm

BS in Sociology, University of Illinois
MSW (Master of Social Work), Portland State University
PhD in Sociology, Emory University

Prior to coming to Germany, Diane Jones-Palm was the program director of the Prevention Center Research Program at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. As such, she directed health promotion and disease prevention research at academic institutions in the United States, and coordinated research in areas of critical concern to the health of the U.S. public. Currently, in addition to teaching for UMUC, Dr. Jones-Palm is called frequently to serve as technical advisor to the World Health Organization in the area of physical activity and health. She lives and teaches in the Mannheim/Heidelberg area.

Barry H. Massey

Barry Massey has authored more than 20 publications on polymer research and technology. Before coming to UMUC-Europe, Massey worked as a management coordinator and international management consultant in the chemical industry. He teaches frequently "downrange" in the Balkans.

Christopher Melley

Christopher Melley has presented papers on a variety of topics in ethics and applied philosophy. In September 1995, he gave a paper titled "medical Malpractice: Cultural and Philosophical Aspect" on the Island of Kos, Greece, at the 9th Annual Conference of the European Society for Philosophy of Medicine and Health Care. A member of UMUC-Europe since 1984, Melley has also taught for Duchess Community College and Marist College. He teaches in the Ramstein/Kaiserslautern area.

Barbara Nucci

Barbara Nucci has been studying, exploring, and experiencing the language and culture of Italy for most of her adult life. She teaches courses in Italian language and culture for UMUC-Europe in southern Italy and lectures for Elderhostel on contemporary Italian society. Her translations of Italian women's writing appear in New Italian Women, Italic Press, New York 1989.

Richard Powers

BA, Wake Forest University

Major, U.S. Army Reserves

Richard Powers teaches composition, creative writing, and literature for UMUC-Europe in Stuttgart, and American literature classes at Stuttgart Universität. In addition, Mr. Powers serves as faculty trainer for WebTycho, UMUC's software platform for online distance education. He has designed, developed, and taught eight different online courses. His poetry has been published in various literary magazines in Germany. In addition, Powers has worked for several book publishers and electronic bibliographic database companies. Commissioned in the Army in 1982, Major Powers now serves as Assistant Adjutant General as an IMA reservist with European Command Headquarters in Vaihingen, Stuttgart.

Andreas Rambow

Andreas Rambow's research and teaching interest in European monetary and accounting issues started in 1993 when he wrote a master's thesis on the Bundesbank and European monetary union. He has been teaching with UMUC-Europe since the fall of 1995 in the business and management program. Located in Belgium, he teaches regularly and has practical experience in the topics listed.

Paul Rose has taught a wide range of government and politics courses for UMUC-Europe since 1974. His teaching areas are international politics and American foreign policy. Prior to joining the UMUC-Europe, he taught government courses for the U.S. Information Agency for 12 years and was non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force. Rose lives and teaches in the Ramstein/Kaiserslautern area.

Antonio Ruiz-Canavate

Antonio Ruiz-Canavate previously held positions as the head of Oceanography at the Spanish Hydrographic Institute and as professor at the Postgraduate Hydrography School. In addition, he was professor at the Marine Science Faculty at Cadiz University at the Rota Navy Campus. Ruiz-Canavate has been teaching college-level mathematics in Rota since 1982 and actively participates in oceanic research through the University of Cadiz and other Spanish universities. He has written numerous scientific articles and books on oceanography.

Ronald Schlundt

Ronald Schlundt has many years experience teaching history and government in overseas settings. Besides teaching for Maryland in Europe, he was a Fulbright professor in American studies at the University of Tokyo and taught courses in American Foreign policy for the Japanese Foreign Service Training Institute. Schlundt teaches and lives in the Ramstein/Kaiserslautern area.

Ronald M. Taubitz

Ronald Taubitz received his BA, MA, and PhD in English language and literature and theoretical linguistics from Arizona State University. He was a Fulbright lecturer at the University of Oviedo in northwestern Spain, a member of the board of directors of the Fulbright Commission in Madrid, and a visiting lecturer in applied linguistics and English language teaching methodology at the University of Madrid. He was also academic director of the Cultural Center of the United States in Madrid and president of TESOL in Spain. He has published numerous articles on language teaching and applied linguistics. He teaches in the Mannheim area.

Deborah Tevis-Noelting is a member of Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity, the Women's Law Association, and the Arizona Journal of International and Comparative Law. She is currently an active member of the Arizona and American Bar Associations. Her article "The Fate of the German Double Taxation Conventions After the Reunification" appeared in European Taxation. She lives in the Stuttgart area.
