Directions and Parking

The UMUC office is located in the Education Center in Building 20, room 001.

To find our location, please take Motorway A-1, driving north away from London. Continue driving on the A-1 motorway toward Leeds, but by-pass the Leeds exit. The next exit off of the A-1 motorway is the Harrogate exit, A-59. Take this exit and proceed straight to Harrogate. Once in the city of Harrogate you will continue to follow the A-59 all the way through the city toward Skipton. You will travel about 10 miles outside of Harrogate. When you see the Black Bull Pub on the right side of the road, continue past the pub, but take next right onto Cold Cotes Road. When you come to a stop sign about one mile down this road, make a left turn and continue straight until you see the main gate for the Harrogarte base on the left side.

Once on the base, you continue straight through the front gate. As the road begins to curve before you get to the fire station, turn left. Once you take this left, the Education Center, Bldg 20, will be on the right. There is a parking lot just past this building.

Computer Labs

The UMUC sponsored computer lab has 14 computers available for student use. Each computer provides access to the Internet, as well as a word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software. The computer lab is accessible Mon–Thu, 0900-2200.

Testing Services

Placement tests for English and math courses and proctored exams for distance education courses are available through your local UMUC office. Please contact the field representative to schedule an appointment.

Additional Site Information

RAF Menwith Hill is approximately 8 miles west of community Harrogate. The base occupies 545 acres of rolling Yorkshire moor and is surrounded by general farming country. The city of Harrogate is a municipal borough of approximately 150,000 people, located 13 miles north of Leeds and 22 miles west of York. Train and bus links from Harrogate to the rest of the UK are excellent. Harrogate is on the main Edinburgh/London route for British Rail and the local airport with connections north and south is Leeds/Bradford. If you plan to drive to Harrogate from the continent, it is recommended that you take the Hull ferry crossing. Although an overnight ferry, it tends to be easier than a Dover/Calais run which requires that you then travel on the notoriously congested M25 London ring road.

There is no lodging available on base, however the civilian community of Harrogate provides several bed and breakfasts, as well as hotels. Dining facilities on post include a Burger King, Shoppette, Community Club restaurant, fast food kiosk in the bowling alley, and a commissary. Recreation facilities include a base library, fitness center, bowling alley, and craft shop.
