Counseling

The Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology (MA) and the Master of Education degree in School Counseling (MEd) provide the knowledge and skills for practice in counseling and related human service professions within the military and civilian communities.  The MA in Counseling Psychology prepares counselors for state licensure to work primarily with adults in a range of community counseling settings. Master’s level clinicians are the major providers of mental health services nationwide. The MEd in School Counseling prepares counselors for certification by the state’s department of education to work with school children and youth across all levels from primary through high school (K-12). School counselors play a key role in the development of these students.

Both degrees require completion of 48 credits and have a common core of courses. Integrating the theoretical with the practical, these programs combine academic preparation in the areas of behavioral sciences, counseling and research. Clinical instruction includes weekly group supervision class meetings and experiences that help students refine and integrate the skills necessary to assume the role of a professional counselor. Most adults working full time will need approximately 24 to 36 months to complete the degree.

Both degrees are designed to meet requirements for certification through the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). Students may need to take additional coursework and examinations to meet licensure requirements for a particular state.
