UMUC European Division Term 2: 23 OCT to 15 DEC 2000 Information Systems Policy (INSS 620) Professor: De Forest W. Colegrove, Ph.D., MBA Syllabus
Text: Wheelen and Hunger. Strategic Management & Business Policy, 7th ed. Prentice Hall: Upper Saddle River, NJ, 2000. Meetings: Tues, Thurs: 1845 to 2130 (HEIDELBERG) Professor: De Forest W. Colegrove, Ph.D., MBA Description / Objectives: The course examines issues of linking business performance with information systems technology. Alternative structures for matching information system organization with overall organization are discussed and evaluated. Planning mechanisms and strategy are examined. Behavior and legal issues related to information systems management are addressed. Responsibilities: 1. Students are expected to read the assignments prior to coming to class and be prepared to ask questions about the work. The instructor will cover most of the text work and often add material from current periodical literature. The student is responsible for the contents of all assigned chapters and handouts. 2. Each student will conduct a Strategic Audit on a major firm that produces either computer software or hardware, write a paper describing findings, and make a PowerPoint presentation / discussion of 15 - 20 minutes at the end of the course elaborating on the findings. The professor will make himself available for assistance at all phases of the project. It is recommended that the student consider submitting a draft of the paper for advice and comment on/before the 5th week of the course. Grading: Each student will develop a final grade by the extent of his / her contributions in the following areas: |

The Professor: Dr. Colegrove earned an A.A.S. in industrial chemistry from the Rochester Institute of Technology, a B.S. in mathematics and computer science from the Roger Williams University, an M.B.A. in international trade and finance, and the Ph.D. in Humanities, both from the Salve Regina University. His doctoral dissertation is entitled "The Level of Economic Literacy of Russian High School Students." Dr. Colegrove has co-authored a book entitled, "Market Economics: A Practical Primer for Socialists," which has been translated into Cyrillic and is currently being used in the school system in Kazan, Tatarstan. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a Master Chief Sonar Technician (E-9), taught at Rhode Island College, Kazan State University, Johnson and Wales University, and joined Maryland in Europe in 1996. He is currently based in Heidelberg and can be reached at: |
