Course Description: An analysis of problems, issues, and opportunities in managing the procurement, development, utilization, and maintenance of an effective, productive, and satisfied workforce. |
|||||
|
Objectives: Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to: |

1. define human resource strategy, |
|||||
2. distinguish the strategic approach to human resource management, |
|||||
3. understand human resource management and information systems, |
|||||
4. discuss strategic management, |
|||||
5. explain external and global environments, |
|||||
6. iscuss equal employment opportunity, |
|||||
7. discuss job analysis and employee recruitment, |
|||||
8. define socialization, |
|||||
9. discuss the process of performance appraisals and compensation, |
|||||
10. understand the concept of productivity, explain benefit planning, |
|||||
11. be familiar with managerial ethics, and |
|||||
12. identify strategic issues affecting labor unions. |

Participation: There will be four weekend sessions involving active student participation, discussion of textual and other relevant material, and individual and group presentation. Each weekend session will be evaluated at six points by the instructor. Criteria include, but are not limited to, recognition of assigned readings, active discussion, positive attitude towards learning, and academic integrity. |

Mini-reports: Various mini-reports, or brief 3-8 page reports of assigned topics and research, will be required during the term. Topics such as human resource planning, HR model development, performance appraisals, employee compensation plans, benefit plans, ethics, and unions will be covered in these reports. Assignments will be indicated in the class schedule. Individual point values and items to consider will be discussed prior to the due date for each report. All reports must be grammatically correct. Also, spelling, punctuation, and other presentation items msut be correct. Cite in APA format all information not yours and provide a reference page, if needed. |

Class Policies and Procedures: This class is meant to be an enjoyable learning experience for all involved! Student participation is most important; therefore, individual or group research will be required to obtain knowledge and understanding of selected topics. It is important that each student read the assigned text readings prior to each class. Adjustments to the syllabus will only be made if considered significant by the instructor for improved course work, but any changes will be presented prior to required actions. Missed class time requires student work to obtain full credit for the time and work missed in the classroom. Students who require makeup credit will suggest to the instructor an appropriate amount of work to be submitted for credit; however, the final decision will be the instructor's. Academic integrity will be required at all times. Communication will be the key to success! Please notify the instructor before, if possible, of any missed sessions or course work requirement. |

Mini-report #1 will be a 3-5 page report on the demographics of America's workforce. Mini-report #2 will be a 3-6 page report to present how you believe human resource planning affects corporate management. It is important that you identify the corporate structure you are relating to and perhaps present its organizational chart. Mini-report #3 will be a 3-6 page report on what you believe equal opportunity employment is and how you believe it is affecting business managers today. |

Mini-report #8 will be a 3-5 page report on how you see unions in America today and how you would work with them in a corporate environment. |
