Course Description:
This course provides an analysis of human resource management problems and opportunities related to the selection, development, utilization, and administration of an effective, productive and satisfied work force in the public and private sectors. Students focus on the legal regulatory, political, social, and managerial considerations of human resource managers.

Anthony, W. P., Perrewe, P. L., & Kacmar, K.M. (1999). Strategic Human Resource Management (3d ed.). Orlando: The Dryden Press.
Course Objectives:
1. To compare public and private sector human resource management systems.
2. To understand theories and concepts that underlie motivation and performance of employees in the public and private sectors.
3. To consider current challenges in human resource management, such as affirmative action, comparable worth, sexual harassment, drug testing, AIDS, and union-management relations.
4. To address the relationship of politics to public administration and the "the bottom line" to private resource management.
Requirements:
Mastery of concepts emphasized in required readings and class discussions will be accomplished and demonstrated through:
1. Examinations in class

3. Formal presentations
4. Active listening and responding to others
