Course Description Provides an overview of basic computer concepts as they apply to MIS professionals. Emphasis is on basic machine architecture including data storage, manipulation, the human-machine interface including the basics of operating systems, algorithms and programming languages. In addition, the basic concepts of data organization including data and file structures are examined. Emerging trends in computer technology and their impact on organizational information systems are also discussed.
Course Objectives :By the conclusion of this course, the student will :
1. Understand computer logic and data representation in memory;
2. Appreciate the concepts of programming languages at all levels from microcode to high level languages;
3. Be conversant with the terms and meanings of computer hardware technology;
4. Understand how computer peripherals work on their own and in combination;
5. Understand how computer operating systems are used to give the user access to the facilities of the computer.
Requirements Grades for this course will be based on :
Midterm examination 35%
Final examination 35%
Assignment # 1 15% (Hand in at mid-term)
Assignment # 2 15% (Hand in at final)
Grades Grades will be assigned as follows :
A 93-100%
B 80-91%
C 70-79%
( The grade of I- Incomplete - will only be awarded in very exceptional circumstances.)
