Course Title:

Masterpieces of Architecture

Course Materials:

Ian Sutton (1999). Western Architecture: A Survey from Ancient Greece to the Present. Thames & Hudson, ISBN 0500203164.
Websites will be used extensively. Visits to local sites whenever possible.

Course Description:

(Formerly ARTH 340) Analysis of masterworks of architecture, intended to reveal the creative process, the personality of the artist, and the cultural context. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: ARTH 340 or ARTH 382.

Course Goals/Objectives:

Students will be able to:

  • identify major styles in architecture, for example, Classical, Gothic, Renaissance, etc.

  • discuss the significance of the introduction of the arch, dome, steel cage construction,etc.
  • suggest reasons why major innovations in architecture emerge -at specific points in time
  • discuss the role specific architects have played in the history of architecture
  • discuss the responsibility of the architect in a modern setting

Course Introduction:

This course will explore trends in architecture from - Ancient Greece to the present. The structure, form and function of architecture will be discussed as will the influence of geography, climate and history. Extensive use will be made of websites - where major monuments can be experienced visually. Scale and the shaping of space are important aspects of architecture an art form which to be successful must be functional and aesthetically pleasing. The contribution of important architects will be discussed - to include, Frank Lloyd Wright and I.M. Pei.

Grading Information and Criteria:

1. Participation - discussions and responses - 20%
Participation is important. Each student is expected to participate at the weekly rendezvous. This is discussion time - quality input is expected.
2. MIDTERM - 20 %
Essay test - to be administered midway through the course. Students are to respond with a paper. The grade will be based on content and a proper writing style.
3. Term Paper - 10 pages in proper form. 10 %
Topics to be selected after midterm.
4. FINAL - 50%
The same format as the midterm

The grades will be based on a 100 point scale:
100-90 A
89-80 B
79-70 C
6- 60 D
Below 60 F

Other Information:

Assignments will be coordinated with material from the text and from websites.
Lectures will supplement the text.
Study/discussion material will accompany the lectures.
WE WILL DEVOTE THE TIME NECESSARY TO EXPLORE IMPORTANT MATERIAL. AS WE PROCEED ADJUSTMENTS WILL BE MADE WHEN/IF NECESSARY.

Project Descriptions:

Journal - Each student will keep a journal in which they record the results of exercises designed to provide hands-on, eyes-on experiences. Architecture is a functional art. It creates the environments in which we live, play, work, etc. These exercises will be records of our relationship with the spaces in which we live our lives. The architect is expected to created building that are visually pleasing in addition to being functional and practical. How often are these goals achieved? Do the places in which we live and work impact in significant ways on the quality of our lives? Responses to these questions, etc. will be discussed throughout the semester.
