Van Gogh: Life and Work (Amsterdam) Sample Syllabus

Important: I suggest that you purchase the MUSEUM PASS. With this pass you will have unlimited access to the museums where will be working in Amsterdam. It will save you time and money. The price, if you are 24 or above is € 35,00; 23 and below is € 17,50. This pass can be purchased at the Stedelijk, Van Gogh or Rijksmuseum.

Important: If you are late, lost, confused, and do not make it to the 11:15 meeting, return to the Stedelijk at 16:00 for our afternoon meeting. If you are still unable to make contact, call me in Amsterdam at 66 201 16. Leave a message telling me where you can be reached.

Course Schedule:

Day 1	11:15	Meet at the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art cafeteria located next door to the Van Gogh Museum. Introduction, logistics,etc. PROJECT an introduction to the museums where we will be working. Visual journal.
	16:00	Stedelijk Museum cafeteria. Questions/discussions, etc. Group assignment. Important: Bring a small unlined notebook and some magic markers. You will need these materials for your visual journal.
Day 2	11:15	Meet in the Auditorium of the Stedelijk Museum. Lecture: Vincent Van Gogh and the Art of the Modern. Museum project: Vincent Van Gogh, The Early Years, Paris, Arles, San Remy and Auver-sur-Oise. Overview.
	16:00	Meet at the Stedelijk Museum cafeteria for discussions, questions, etc.
Day 3	10:15	Meet in the Auditorium of the VAN GOGH MUSEUM. Lecture: Van Gogh: The History of Expressionism. Museum project / Van Gogh and Contemporary Art.
Day 4	11:00	STEDELIJK MUSEUM - auditorium. FILMS. DeKooning Painting: an introduction to this important Dutch painter. SIX PAINTERS PAINTING: Expressionism in the 80s. Speculation about the future of art.
Day 5	10:15	VAN GOGH MUSEUM auditorium. Lecture. Overview. Continue working on museum projects. 16:00 meet in the Stedelijk Museum cafeteria.
Day 6		Meeting time and place TBA. Trip by chartered bus to visit the Kroeller Mueller Museum in Otterloo. This museum houses an extraordinary collection of works by Van Gogh. IMPORTANT: The fee for the bus is 10 euros round trip. This is to be paid to the driver and it is important that you have the exact amount. Entrance to this collection is 5 euros. This museum is located in a beautiful park. There is an outdoor sculpture collection. Bicycles are available (free) if you want to explore the countryside.
Day 7	10:15	Meet in auditorium of the Van Gogh Museum. Lecture. Review for Final.
Day 8		All work due by 11 a.m. Stedelijk Museum cafeteria.
