Expatriate Writers in Southern France
Avignon, Arles & Nimes, France ENGL 289A / 389A 9 - 16 June 2007 (Term 5) 3 s.h
Avignon, the city of popes and poets, is the starting point for this course which focuses on writers who came to southern France and were inspired by its Roman architecture, troubadours, literature, and breathtaking landscapes. Students will trace this inspiration through literary works by authors including Lawrence Durrell and Henry James and through visits to the colosseum at Nimes and the countryside of Van Gogh's paintings in Arles. Through this intensive course students will discover what Durrell calls "a spirit of place" and will gain an understanding of southern France's influence on expatriate writers.
