Dublin, Ireland:  A Brief Literary History

As an introduction to the literary history of Ireland, this course emphasizes those poets, dramatists, and fiction writers of the 20th century (James Joyce, Lady Gregory, W.B.Yeats, J.M. Synge, Sean O’Casey, Samuel Beckett, Brendan Behan, Brian Friel et al.) who helped forge one of the greatest bodies of modern literature written in English.  Site visits include the following:  Newgrange, the Dublin Writers’ Museum, the James Joyce Museum and Tower, Kilmainham Jail, the National Museum, the National Art Museum, the National Library, the Old Parliament, Trinity College (and the Book of Kells), the Abbey Theatre, St. Stephen’s Green, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral.  Students will also attend several evening theater performances in Dublin.

Requirements
ENGL 288J - Students are expected to read all assigned material, attend lectures and field trips, take a final written exam, and write several short analytical essays.  This course is open to all students who have successfully completed at least nine semester hours of university study.

ENGL 388J -
In addition to reading all assigned material, attending lectures and field trips,  writing several short analytical papers, and taking a final exam, students are expected to write a six- to nine-page research paper.  All papers must be submitted no later than three weeks after the course ends. 

This Field Study course is applicable to an upper- or lower-level course for English, humanities or elective credit. 

Registration
Tuition for a three-semester-hour course must be paid to the Maryland field representative at your education center.  Tuition Assistance and Financial Aid are applicable toward tuition. 

Textbooks
Textbooks will be sent to the field representative in the education center where the student has registered for the course.  Textbooks will cost approximately $75.  Textbooks and prices are subject to change; field representatives should contact the Field Study Office at the time of registration to confirm details.  Textbooks will include:

Selected Poems and Four Plays, W. B. Yeats 
The Essential James Joyce 
Modern Irish Drama, edited by J. P. Harrington 

Accommodations and Transportation
An accommodation fee of approximately $600 covers bed and breakfast (seven nights in Dublin with en suite facilities), some entrance fees to museums and theater tickets.  A $100 down payment is required upon registration; the balance of the fee is due by the registration deadline.  UMUC reserves the right to adjust costs according to the fluctuation of the dollar exchange rate.  If the course is cancelled by UMUC, all payments will be refunded.

Transportation to and from Dublin is the responsibility of the student.

Important!
Before completing travel plans, it is the student's responsibility to verify with the field representative or the Field Study Office in Heidelberg that the course will be offered on the dates indicated and/or has materialized.  A fee of $100 will be charged to students who cancel from the Field Study course after the registration deadline.
