The course content will illustrate and explain the historical development of the city of Heidelberg from its origin to the present. Students will learn about and gain an understanding of the ups and downs in the past of this famous city in the contexts of German and European history. Heidelberg's role as a political and religious center and a focal point of the German romantic and post-romantic movements will be emphasized. A major topic will be the roles which the prince electors (the rulers of Heidelberg) played as well as the connection between Heidelberg and the Palatinate (Pfalz).
By the end of this course students should have a basic understanding of German history and Heidelberg's history, in particular. They should have discovered what makes up the background and origin of a European city like Heidelberg. They should be able to discuss and interpret well-known sights in and around the city. They should also have gained knowledge and appreciation of the rise and fall of powers.

Requirements HIST 217J - Students will write field trip reports and complete a comprehensive take-home exam. This course is open to all students who have successfully completed at least nine semester hours of university study. HIST 317J - In addition to the above requirements, students will write a paper on a relevant topic due no later than two weeks after the course has ended. A list with topics will be provided.
This Field Study course is applicable to an upper- or lower-level course for history, humanities, or elective credit.
Registration Tuition for a three-semester-hour course must be paid to the UMUC-Europe field representative at your education center. Tuition Assistance and Financial Aid are applicable toward tuition.
Textbooks Textbooks will be sent to the field representative in the education center where the student has registered for the course. Textbooks will cost approximately $30. Textbooks and prices are subject to change; field representatives should contact the Field Study Office at the time of registration to confirm details. The recommended textbook is:
Germany--A Short History, D.S. Detwiler, SIUP, 3rd ed. 1999
Accommodations and Transportation Accomodations are the responsibility of the student. The IBIS hotel has a block of rooms saved for UMUC students who wish to stay there. Once registered, students can book a room by mentioning they are with the UMUC group. Each student will pay the hotel directly for their accomodations. A fee of approximately $20 will be paid to UMUC-Europe upon registration to cover a scheduled bus excursion. UMUC-Europe reserves the right to adjust costs according to the fluctuation of the dollar exchange rate. If the course is cancelled by UMUC-Europe, payments will be refunded in full.
Transportation to and from Heidelberg is the responsibility of the student.

Important! Before completing travel plans, it is the student's responsibility to verify with the field representative that the course will be offered on the dates indicated. A fee of $100 will be charged to students who cancel from the Field Study course after the registration deadline.
