INFORMATION

Hotel de Berne

Lectures/group meetings, etc. will  take place in the Breakfast Room and there will be a schedule of our meetings in your packet. You will receive your packet when you arrive in Nice.  Adjustments will be made in our schedule when/if necessary.  The Breakfast Room is also available for study purposes, meeting your fellow students, etc.

IMPORTANT:   Bring with you a small sketchbook (unlined) a few magic markers, glue stick and a small pair of scissors.  We will be doing some hands on experiments.  These will be seeing exercises, not art making exercises.  So there is no need to stress if you are feeling insecure about your art making abilities.

In some of the places we will be visiting it is possible to have a picnic/lunch at the beach.  If this appeals to you bring a beach towel. 

WEATHER - who knows?  The weather is so unpredictable these days. El Nino, etc, whatever. If the weather is as it has been in the past the mornings will be sunny and cool, the afternoons sunny and warm, and the evenings cool.
 
CLOTHES informal for example, jeans, t-shirts, sweat shirts, etc. If the weather is normal you will need a light jacket for the evenings.  We will be doing a lot of walking COMFORTABLE SHOES ARE NECESSARY.

OUR FIRST CLASS MEETING: 6 p.m., Sat., 15 March in the Breakfast Room of the Hotel de Berne.

SUNDAY a.m. after breakfast will depart for the Chagall Museum. In the afternoon we will be in St. Paul de Vence- lunch, and then to the Maeght Foundation located outside the walls of the city. 

Monday we will be visiting St. Tropez, details for the week will be in your packet.

IMPORTANT:  The Final Exam will be Friday Part 1 in the afternoon, Part 2 in the Evening.   All written work will be due at 11 a.m Saturday.  Check out time at the hotel is 11 a.m.

Please read the following chapters and answer the questions assigned to each chapter.   There will be time to complete these assignments in Nice.

Chapter 1.  The Mechanical Paradise

1. According to Robert Hughes, the Eiffel Tower functions as pivot in consciousness.  In your opinion, what does this mean?
2. How does Cubism reflect a change in consciousness? (A new way of seeing)?
3. Explain what is meant by trying to paint process. In your opinion, is this a valid goal?
4. How does cubist perspective differ from linear perspective? In your opinion, which is more realistic? (See cartoon in packet B.C.& Calvin & Hobbs)
5. Make a quick sketch of process/time. Make a quick sketch of an apple. Which of these two subjects did you find easier to capture?

Chapter 3   The Landscape of Pleasure

1. In your own words define the Impressionism.  What was the Impressionist trying to capture?  Did he/she succeed?
2. Who, according to Hughes, were the 4 major Post Impressionists?
3. What is Pointillism? How does this style/method differ from Impressionism?
4. What important 20th century art movements (2) are anticipated in the work of the Post Impressionists?

Chapter 6  The View from the Edge
1. What important role does Vincent Van Gogh play in the history of modern art?
2. How is the work of Edward Munch similar to Van Gogh’s and how is it different? In your opinion, what is the content (what is it about) of  Munch’s Scream?
3. What is unique about the work of Jackson Pollock? What is unique about his method?
4. In your opinion, what is meant by a landscape of the soul? How would you describe/express the landscape of your soul?

Chapter 7  Culture as Nature

1. What, according to Hughes, has replaced nature in our lives?
2. How do pictures differ from signs?
3. Who was Stuart Davis? What role did he play in the Pop Movement? What did Davis say about Jazz?
4. What was Robert Rauschenberg’s House Rule? With what was he competing when he was working in his New York studio?
5. What are Combines?
6. How has television changed the way we see? What is an electronic fragment?
7. What role does Andy Warhol play in the modern movement? How does he define Art?
8. Do you agree that art can be anything?
