Expatriate Writers in Venice: 1800 to Present

Expatriate Writers in Venice:  1800 to Present

Venice, Italy
19 - 26 October 2008
ENGL288B/388B
Fall 2008, On-site Session 2

Explore romantic Venice, beloved by world-renowned writers like James and Hemingway, by major poets such as Byron and Browning, and by art critics and essayists.  Revel in the intense sensations of the glorious past and hauntingly beautiful present of a city that has always lured and held the hearts of visitors.  This course will combine the visual influences of Venice--her architecture, art works, and picturesque landscape--with study of the great literature produced there.  No other place has given so many famous writers quite this combination of ingredients which encourage creative inspiration.  Literary walks, with on-site examination of significant passages, provide a living sense of the writers' purposes and an appreciation of their powers of description.
